Time to raid mum’s closet!
We’ve all had our moments dressing up in our mum’s clothes, trying on her high heels and bright red lipstick and preening in front of the mirror. We couldn’t wait to grow up! And grow up, we did. So did our fashion sense. We weren’t posing in awkward heels or extra long skirts anymore. Everything became more chiseled, modern and stylish.
This season, though, we’d like to be different and revisit nostalgia by digging deep in our mum’s closets for hidden treasures that no designer can match up to. An ancient, rusted brooch or an old silk scarf; it’s what true elegance is made of.
Read on to find below our top five picks of things every girl must steal from her mum’s closet:
1. Scarves
Bring back the 60s romance with scarves. Silk scarves were a staple back then and it’s no surprise why. Scarves have to be one of the most versatile accessories in your closest. There are dozens of ways to wear it! Besides, you can use them as a headband, belt or even a purse accessory. The sheer feel of the soft fabric on your hands is enough to make you want to stock up on them in all colours and prints!
2. Glasses
Call us hipsters, nerds or geek lovers – we’re going gaga over retro and vintage frames. When it comes to sunglasses, wayfarers and oversized frames in bright colours are our pick for this season. As for frames, thick rims are still chic as ever. While black and red are classic favourites, we love the tortoiseshell frames too. Shut everyone up with your smartness and style.
3. Hats
Hats are just perfect for the harsh Middle East weather. They protect your hair from the heat and dust and look so lovely; straight out of an old English film. We love donning our hats when we’re having a bad hair day and don’t want anyone to know! They’re our secret version of the thinking cap adage.
4. Leather bag
Leather is an old classic and what better place to find the perfect bag than your mum’s buried stash. Trust us, you’ll find at least one treasure hiding there. It might need some cleaning and maintenance but nothing like classic, genuine leather handed down from another generation to make you feel like the world is in your hands. Or in this case, your bag.
5. Dresses
We love the dresses from the 60s to the 80s. Each style had a charm of its own. To understand which one suits you best, let us introduce you to the Mad Men guide. As Mad Men costume designer herself puts it, find a character that you relate to and take it from there. If you think you’re a sweet and simple Peggy, think checks, plaids, pleats polka dots, peter pan collars, bows and kitten heels. Got the smarts and sass to pull off a Joan? Go for toned sheaths fitted to perfection, over sized handbags, scarves and pumps. And if you think you have the class to be Mrs. Draper herself then indulge in pearls, a matching handbag, full skirts, gloves, and red lipstick.
